Dental treatment during pregnancy - first trimester
As the strength of your teeth can be compromised during pregnancy, it is important to get dental treatment even during this time: visit your dentist for regular check-ups, brush your teeth every day in the morning and at night, and follow an oral hygiene routine. Plaque removal is also important during pregnancy, to avoid gum inflammation.
As pregnancy is a sensitive time, unnecessary dental treatments should be avoided. Complicated dental treatments, such as fillings and root canal treatments, should be postponed to the second trimester.
Dental treatment during pregnancy - second trimester
During the second trimester, fillings and even root canal treatments may be performed, but adjusted materials should be used, i.e., nonhazardous materials for the mother and the fetus.
During pregnancy, women tend to suffer from gum inflammation. In such cases, a gum specialist should be consulted.
X-rays should be avoided, as they can cause exposure to dangerous radiation, and only be taken when they are imperative.
Dental treatment during pregnancy - third trimester
The third trimester is similar to the first one. During this time, unnecessary dental treatments should be avoided. Plaque removal is still important and should not be avoided, to prevent gum inflammation. Regular brushing and oral hygiene should be adhered to, to be able to reach the end of your pregnancy with a healthy set of teeth.
