Bone grafting for dental implants
Lack of bone and inability to perform dental implants
Many people were disappointed to learn that for them the process is more complicated or even impossible, as their bone tissue is very thin in a way that prevents the dentist from installing the structure. Dentistry has developed, and in recent years a solution was found: a bone grafting procedure.
How is this done?
The importance of bone for dental implants
Dental implants are installed with screws into the jawbone, to allow stability of the implant. When the jawbone is too weak or thin, the implants do not have the required base.
What causes bone loss?
In some cases, thin bone is a condition the patient is born with. As we grow older, our nose sinus grow, pushing the bone away from the jaw. In such cases, a dental implant cannot be inserted, as the bone is out of place. This can happen in elderly people, and patients with calcium deficiency.
Bone grafting procedure for dental implants
To overcome this problem, we at Dr. Ackerman’s Dental Clinic perform a bone grafting procedure for dental implants. This procedure includes insertion of material into the jawbone that makes it thicker and closer to the missing space.
The first preference is to use bone material taken from the patient, to allow for better results and avoid possible incompatibility. If this is not possible, synthetic bone material is used. Some dentists use a combination of these 2 possibilities – bone from the patient and synnthetic material – in accordance with the dentist’s best judgment.
